Earth Day

Earth day is an annual celebration to demonstrate support for environmental protection. You may see stores encouraging you to use your reusable bags on this day. Most places will be reminding us the famous R's, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".

In 1969 at an United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Conference, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace. In celebration of the first Earth day, President Richard Nixon, and First Lady Pat Nixon planted a tree on the White House south lawn.

Due to this new push for a cleaner Earth, the 70's marked an environmental legislation, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Superfund, Toxics Substances Control Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

What will you do this year in honor of Earth Day to make our planet a little cleaner?
